What is kosen judo?

Kosen Judo is a style of judo that originated in Japan and gained popularity in the early 20th century. It is known for its focus on ground fighting techniques, especially ne-waza (grappling techniques). Kosen Judo schools often emphasize the use of pins, joint locks, and chokeholds to control and submit opponents on the ground.

Kosen Judo was initially developed as a way to train and prepare university students for competition in the All-Japan Judo Championship, which allowed for extended periods of ground fighting. The style became known for its emphasis on skill and technique over brute strength and athleticism.

Many of the top judo practitioners in Japan during the early 20th century trained in Kosen Judo schools, and the style had a significant influence on the development of judo as a whole. Today, Kosen Judo is still practiced in some universities and judo clubs in Japan, as well as by judo practitioners around the world who are interested in its unique focus on ground fighting techniques.
